3d PARTY MICROPHONES: Use the 3d Party Microphone Mode on the Menu with MacRecorder¬ and other 3d party microphones.
SINGLE DUPLEX OPERATION: Macintosh LC's, vx's and some other models have single duplex sound chips installed by Apple. These chips can access the microphone OR speaker, but not both at the same time. This means that your conversation on one of these machines will be like a speaker phone. It is MOST important that the sensitivity on these machines be adjusted correctly. If it is not, you will not hear any of the incoming conversation.
SENSITIVITY AND VOLUME ADJUSTMENT: To test if the sensitivity is adjusted correctly, be silent and watch the sound and network icon indicators. If they are "pulsating" while you are quiet, the sensitivity is too high. If you are talking and the icons are NOT moving then the sensitivity is too low. Volume should be adjusted so as to minimize feedback and echo. The placement of microphones and speakers on some machines such as powerbooks makes adjustment even more critical. You may find a headset or earpiece/microphone combination a better solution.
